The Basic Spelling Vocabulary List

This list was devised to help educators know which spelling words should be taught to children. The list contains 850 words that account for 80 percent of the words children use in their writing — the ones they need to be able to spell correctly. Mastering this relatively small corpus of words yields a high rate of return. For example, the most common 1,000 words are used 13 times more frequently than the next most common 1,000 words. It also provides teachers flexibility in planning spelling instruction, providing an opportunity to give children the "basics" while supplementing with other spelling words germane to classroom activities. Grade level for each word was determined based upon difficulty, pattern of occurrence in children's writing across grades, and grade placement on current vocabulary lists and spelling materials. Words that children have difficulty spelling correctly are marked with an asterisk.

Methods for Learning English Vocabulary

1. Vocabulary notebook

Keep a vocabulary notebook. This is very important. There are different ways you can organize your notebook: Lists of words with translations. It works best if you can organize your lists into types of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.) or by theme (school, colors, food, etc.). You could also group synonyms (words with the same meaning) and antonyms (opposites) together. 'Mind maps' or 'Spider diagrams.' These work really well if you have a visual mind. Write the subject in the middle of the page (for example, 'food') and draw lines coming out from it, like a spider. At the end of each line, write a word connected to the subject (for example, 'fruit'). You can draw more lines from these words, leading to words that are connected to them, so in this case this you could write 'banana, apple,' etc. If you add color or pictures to your diagram it can help you remember even better. Some people add examples of how to use the word in a sentence too.

2. Review

Review the vocabulary. Simply writing the words in a notebook won't help you remember them. Certainly, you won't remember them for long. Review your notebook at regular intervals:

3. Activate

Activate the vocabulary. This means use it. Challenge yourself to use new words in your conversations or your writing. The more you use new words, the more likely you are to remember them. If you follow these simple steps (keep a vocabulary notebook, review the vocabulary, practice and activate the vocabulary), you should gradually see more and more improvement!

captivating and tantalizing

The captivating aroma of freshly baked bread was tantalizing, drawing everyone closer to indulge in its delightful flavors.
